San Diego Comic-Con 2016

Hi gang! It's that time of year again, when all of us comics folk migrate to our zany home-away-from-home, San Diego Comic-Con!

If you're going to be there, here's where you can find me:

Make Your Own Story

Thursday July 21, 2016 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Room 24ABC
Kids! Join authors Jeffrey Brown (Lucy and Andy Neanderthal), John Patrick Green (Hippopotamister), Eddie Pittman (Red's Planet), and Judd Winick (Hilo) in an interactive storytelling hour, where you tell the story, and these authors draw it. Bring your most creative storytelling hats! Moderated by Jennifer L. Holm (Sunny Side Up).

(OK, so technically it's my sister's panel, but I'll probably be there to egg her on.)

Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards
Friday July 22, 2016 8:00pm - 11:00pm
Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront
The 28th annual Eisner Awards (the “Oscars” of the comics industry) honor comics creators and works in 31 categories. With special guest host John Barrowman (Arrow, Torchwood), presenters will include actors Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica), Annie Wersching (Vampire Diaries, 24), Drew Roy (Falling Skies), and Chris Gorham (Covert Affairs, Once Upon a Time); Beau Smith and the cast of Wynona Earp; voice actor Phil Lamarr (Futurama); Hall of Fame nominees Lynda Barry and Matt Groening; beloved cartoonist Sergio Aragon├ęs (Groo, MAD), and several nominated creators. Other prestigious awards to be given out include the Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award, the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comics Writing, and the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award.

More importantly than any of those quote-unquote FAMOUS PEOPLE, our book SUNNY SIDE UP is nominated for an Eisner Award! Also, this is the first time Jenni and I will be PRESENTING Eisner Awards. So look for us onstage, probably mispronouncing people's names, possibly stammering out thanks for our own award (fingers crossed!).

Dig Deep
Saturday July 23, 2016 10:00am - 11:00am
Room 28DE
Graphic novels for children and young adults are tackling thorny subjects that relate to real kids. Comics creators discuss the deep subjects raised by their graphic novels and why these have become so popular. Moderated by Meryl Jaffe (CBLDF,Raising a Reader and Using Graphic Novels in Education), panelists include Cece Bell (El Deafo), Jennifer Holm and Matthew Holm (Sunny Side Up), Nathan Hale (Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales), Gene Yang (American Born Chinese, Boxers & Saints, Coders), and MK Reed.

Actually, I'm the one who will be moderating this panel, in a last-minute substitution. So come out and listen to us all chat about the challenges of dealing with serious subject matter in children's graphic novels!

Calling All Kids: The Great Draw-Off
Sunday July 24, 2016 10:00am - 11:00am

A panel of bestselling kids' comics creators engage in a live draw-off with audience participation. Perfect for kids of all ages! Featuring comic greats Jeffrey Brown (Jedi Academy), Nathan Hale (Hazardous Tales), Dana Simpson (Phoebe and Her Unicorn), Lucas Turnbloom (Dream Jumpers), and Judd Winnick (Hilo). This interactive experience will by moderated by sibling duo Jennifer and Matthew Holm (Babymouse, Sunny Side Up), with color commentary and sound effects by Tom Racine (Tall Tale Radio podcast).

Sunday is Kids' Day at Comic-Con, so bring your children out to this crazy free-for-all of a panel! Jenni and I will call audience volunteers up to help our pros draw wacky comics on the spot. Who will be the greatest??? (YOU, of course, if you come out!)

See you at the Con!
