SPECIAL: Inside Squish! The SUPER AMOEBA comic book covers

Hi gang! I'm finishing up the eighth volume in the SQUISH series—SQUISH: POD VS. POD—and I thought I would share something special with you.

One of the central things about the SQUISH books is that, in each volume, Squish (our intrepid amoeba protagonist) is busy reading an issue of his favorite comic book series, The Adventures of Super Amoeba. The action in Squish's life is interrupted/paralleled by glimpses into the action of the comic book. And, in each volume, Squish reads a different issue of Super Amoeba.

But did you realize that each issue of The Adventures of Super Amoeba also has its own cover?

The eagle-eyed among you may have spotted Squish holding the comics, and been able to make out the teeny-tiny scenes on the covers. But today, for your enjoyment, I present all seven Super Amoeba covers, at full size!

from #5—SQUISH: GAME ON!

... and what's the cover for the upcoming #8—SQUISH: POD VS. POD? Well ... you'll just have to wait and see! (Truthfully, I have to go draw it RIGHT NOW.)

Introducing THE YARN: A new podcast about books!

It's only a week until our new graphic novel SUNNY SIDE UP comes out. Here's a great way to pass the time between now and then:

THE YARN is a new podcast by those kidlit celebrities, Colby Sharp and Travis Jonker. The podcast is done "Serial"-style, with an entire season dedicated to only one story. In this case, that one story is ... our story! The story of how SUNNY SIDE UP came to be made. Colby and Travis interviewed many people involved with the book, from Jenni and me to art director Phil Falco, editor David Levithan, publisher David Saylor, colorist Lark Pien, and even graphic-novel trailblazer Raina Telgemeier, who helped make this book format possible.

Best of all, the episodes of THE YARN are being released one a day from now until the launch of SUNNY SIDE UP next week! So you can either gobble up a new episode every morning, or wait till next week and binge-listen to them all.

Check it out!

Sunny Side Up!

Yes, I am back. Sort of. Sorry for the yearlong absence. (I blame Twitter—it makes posting so fast... In other news, read my Twitter feed to stay in touch.) A lot has happened in the past year, including amazing working trips to Brazil, Canada, and China! But I've really spent most of the past year with my nose to the grindstone, working on more books than I can count. So it's high time I mention one of the biggest things I've been working on:

SUNNY SIDE UP is a graphic novel, but it's a little different than the work my sister, Jenni, and I have been doing in BABYMOUSE and SQUISH and COMICS SQUAD. Let me list some "firsts" for SUNNY SIDE UP:
  • First FULL-COLOR graphic novel we have made (with the help of wonder-colorist Lark Pien)
  • First graphic novel we've made of its length—224 PAGES!
  • First graphic novel set in the "real world": It takes place in Pennsylvania and Florida in the 1970s, and it features (GASP!) human beings.
  • First graphic novel we've made with Scholastic Graphix—the publisher behind awesome books like Raina Telgemeier's SMILE and SISTERS and Jeff Smith's BONE!
The book goes on sale August 25, 2015. Here are some early reviews to whet your appetite:

★ KIRKUS (starred review)

★ SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL (starred review)

★ SHELF AWARENESS (starred review)
