Matthew Holm at Portland, OR's Wordstock Festival October 5 and 6

Hello Portlandians! (And Vancouvrians ... and any other intrepid Northwesterners ...) I will be at this year's Wordstock Festival—an awesome book festival at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland—on Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6. All of my events are listed here:

Catch me and other brilliant authors at 5PM on Saturday for the panel discussion, "Strategies for Reluctant Readers" at the Mutt Enterprises Stage (OCC, D-135). This will be a discussion geared more towards educators, parents, and other grown-up types (though kids are welcome; we'll try not to bore you too much!).

Then on Sunday at 1PM, I'll be talking, drawing, and signing books alongside author Kiki Thorpe at the Knowledge Universe Little Word Stage. Bring the kids--this one is for them!

New BABYMOUSE Facebook Page!

We just launched a new Facebook Page for BABYMOUSE! (We had a Facebook Group in the past, but FB seems to be letting the Group model fall by the wayside.)

So go there and LIKE something, for crying out loud!

Matt and Jenni Holm interviewed by Tall Tale Radio

Tom Racine is a lively fellow we had the great fortune to meet at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. He moderated the panel about TEAM CUL DE SAC (video of the panel here--why aren't there more videos of SDCC events online??), brought his daughter (a fan of comics, and of our comics!) to our live drawing event at SDCC, and asked to interview us for his podcast, TALL TALE RADIO!

It's quite an in-depth interview, and covers a great deal about how we got into comics in the first place, our process, and our views on getting kids to read. The podcast was released in segments at, but now you can get it all right here:

Rox in Sox: A Wordstock Pre-event in Lake Oswego, OR

If you live in the Portland area, bring the kids down to the ROX IN SOX Children's Music and Book Festival! The outdoor festival is taking place on Saturday, August 3, beginning at 10am at

Lake Oswego, OR 97035 ‎

I'll be taking the stage around 1:50pm to talk with the crowd about my books and, more fun, do some live drawing with volunteers from the audience!

Hope to see you there!

San Diego and Beyond!

Sorry I've been away so long! The last 12 months have been crazy, and out of those 12 months, I've been home fewer than six. Lotsa traveling, and this spring I scheduled twice my usual number of author visits to schools, for reasons I'm still trying to untangle...

Oh yeah. So then, this happened:

Woot! Yes, at long last, BABYMOUSE FOR PRESIDENT won the Eisner Award for Best Publication for Early Readers. It was a great night at San Diego Comic-Con, and a great bit of validation that the amazing graphic novels for kids that are being produced (almost entirely) by traditional book publishers are finally breaking through to the consciousness of the comic-book world.

As we said in our acceptance speech (at least, I think we did... it's kind of blurry), we owe huge thanks to our editor, Shana Corey, and our art director, Cathy Goldsmith, who really helped us create the format of BABYMOUSE and figure out how it would all work. And, we also owe huge thanks to the librarians of the world, who have always been the biggest champions of graphic novels and comics for kids—they see, every day, which books get checked out, and which books turn non-readers into readers. Couldn't have done it without you folks!

I promise to post a bit more often from now on. The end of summer is shaping up to be just as busy as spring was, so stay tuned for more events and more exciting book news!

Matthew Holm at Emerald City Comicon!

Hi gang! Spring is in the air, so I wanted to come out of my blog-hibernation here to let you know that I will be appearing (as if by magic! no, not really...) at EMERALD CITY COMICON in Seattle, Wash., this SATURDAY, MARCH 2.

I'll be taking part in two events:

Room: ECCC KIDS! - ROOM 201
Start: 12:00PM
End: 12:55PM

CBLDF Presents: Newbery Award winning Children's book author and graphic novelist Jenni Holm discusses ways to get children excited about reading, encouraging creativity, and cultivating a love of literature and art, with a focus on great graphic novels and comics for younger readers.

Room: ECCC KIDS! - ROOM 201
Start: 3:00PM
End: 3:55PM

Comics Quickfire! A fast-paced game show where volunteers are paired off with (or against) professional cartoonists in a series of fun-filled drawing challenges! Audience members will provide suggestions and add to the creation of totally improvised epic drawings! Featuring host Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy), Raina Telgemeier (Smile), Skottie Young (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), Katie Cook (My Little Pony), John Green (Teen Boat), & more! Great for all ages!

Come join us! I'll be chit-chatting with other panelists on the best ways to get kids excited about reading (via comics, naturally) at the first one, and doing "color commentary" during the second event.

See you there!
